Lough Rynn House and gardens is located just 2 miles from the guesthouse. With ornamental gardens and nature trail, the locality is well known for its beautiful scenery and numerous lakes.

Sport:

G.A.A is the most popular sport in Mohill and the surrounding areas, with men’s, women’s and underage enjoying success in recent years.
Mohill, Eslin, Fenagh, Cloone, Bornacoola, Gortletteragh and Aughavas are the local clubs.

Fishing is widely enjoyed by locals and those who visit. There are numerous lakes and rivers in the surrounding areas which are well stocked with Pike, Perch, Bream, and Trout. The river Shannon is less that 5km away with opportunities to cruise the Shannon and fish for Salmon. This makes Mohill an attractive place for Anglers, professional and amateurs alike.

Horse riding around the outskirts of Mohill is an ideal way to relax and appreciate the beautiful unspoiled countryside.

Walking is extremely popular in the area, with ideal walking conditions for the hill walker and the outdoor enthusiasts. An ideal way to view the beautiful landscape.

John McGahern

John McGahern (1934-2006)

John McGahern grew up in Balinamore Co.Leitrim, and after many years abroad settled back in Fenagh 7km outside Mohill. He is arguably the most important writer since Samuel Becket  and his works included, ‘The Barraks’, The Dark, The ‘Leavetaking’, ‘The Pornographer’, ‘Amongst Women’ and ‘That they mayface the Rising Sun’.
His writing has an obsession with the home and the family, and is a revealing insight into relationships between Family, Religion and Education in Ireland.
The John McGahern Seminar and Summer School is a week of intensive workshops and seminars of his work. It’s held at the end of July in Rynn Castle.

Lord Leitrim

Lord Leitrim (1806-1878)

Lord Leirim or William Sydney Clement was the 3rd earl of Leitrim. He inherited the Lough Rynn Estate and although well known to be vile, he had visionary ideas for the area It is widely believed locally that he was a cruel ruthless landlord who showed no mercy to the tenant farmers and evicted with great enthusiasm at his peril. His treatment of women is one of the many shocking behaviors of this 3rd earl of Leitrim. He was murdered with his clerk and driver on route to his residence in Milford Co. Donegal. His murderer was never found.

The River Shannon is a splendid river that owes its splendor not only to its winding length but also to the many large beautiful lakes that feed it. Lough Key, Lough Arrow, Lough Skeon are to name but a few and a scenic drive around these lakes is truly breathtaking. On the other hand a cruise on the Shannon is the ultimate way to relax and unwind with friends and is second to none for a healthy break.

Mohill Arts & Storytelling festival

Mohill Arts and Storytelling Festival is held annually in October and has proved to be a huge success, with Seanchais- Storytellers from all over Ireland converging in Mohill to tell their wonderful Folk Tales and stories.
Musicians from a wide range of Musical Backgrounds gather to play in the pubs, local halls and on the street.
A wonderful Art exhibition featuring local Artists continues throughout the weekend.
It’s a thoroughly enjoyable and unique festival.

Mohill Horse Fair

The horse fair is held annually also in October running along side the Arts and Storytelling Festival. It too has been a massive success where Horses, Ponies, Donkeys Goats, Sheep, Dogs, Foul and much more are all traded for on the street. It is a unique and magical display, taking a trip back in time to an Ireland of our grandparents and great-grandparents. It draws huge crowds, farmers and traders bring their animals from far and near to haggle and barter their wears.

Agricultural Show

Mohill Agricultural show is held in Mid August and is now in its 80th decade. Rain, Hail or Shine it’s always a success, much due to the hard work of the loyal, hardworking committee. It is the highlight of the agricultural year and displays and competitions occur throughout the day. People come from far and near to show their animals and compete.
There are also displays and competitions in Art and Craft, Vegetables, Baking, Bonny Baby competitions as well as the different breeds of Animal.
